Massage Therapy

Ease pain, reduce stress, and restore balance with personalized treatment from our experienced massage therapists.

What is Massage Therapy?

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is a hands-on treatment focused on soft tissues and joints, helping to relieve tension, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing process. At Focus Physio + Wellness, our college-trained massage therapists use evidence-informed techniques to assess and treat injuries, reduce stress, and improve overall function.

Each session is tailored to your unique needs—whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or simply looking to relax and reset. Our team is experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches, including deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and relaxation-focused treatments. We work closely with clients to help improve quality of life, enhance physical performance, and restore balance in both body and mind.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

After a discussion about the reason for your visit, the RMT will complete an assessment to determine the best way to treat your injury. This may involve checking movement, posture, or muscle strength. Based on the assessment findings, a treatment plan will be developed and discussed with you. The therapist will then leave the private treatment room to allow you to disrobe to your level of comfort before returning to perform the hands-on portion of the massage treatment. The session finishes with recommendations surrounding postural adjustments, stretches, or other home care to assist in recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of conditions do your RMTs treat?
Our therapists can use a combination of deep tissue, myofascial release, visceral manipulation, Graston, trigger point release, joint mobilization and stretching techniques to help treat: headaches and migraines, TMJ dysfunctions, poor posture, mobility issues, post MVA soft tissue injuries, back and neck pain, and scar tissue mobilization.
Do you offer prenatal massage appointments?
Yes, we do. Our clinic is equipped with specialized pregnancy pillows to support mothers-to-be in a face down position. Pregnant women can also be safely treated in side lying.
Do you accept ICBC claims for RMT?
Yes, we do. Following a motor vehicle accident (MVA) after April 1st, 2019, ICBC has preapproved 12 RMT treatments. Please see our fee schedule for pricing.
How long of a massage appointment should I book?
For your first appointment, we require a minimum of 45 minutes. This allows your RMT to discuss your current issue, review your health history, complete an assessment, provide the massage treatment, and go over any home care stretches or exercises. The length of your follow up appointment will depend on the injury you are seeking treatment for. If you are receiving treatment for one area only, 30 minutes may be sufficient. If there are multiple areas that require treatment, 45 or 60 minute sessions may be more appropriate. During your first session, your therapist will discuss their recommendations with respect to treatment duration and frequency for future massage appointments.
Are all of your massage therapists registered?
Yes they are. Each massage therapist has undergone extensive training at the college level, including a minimum requirement of 3000 hours of hands-on massage treatment. Once their training is complete, all massage therapists must successfully pass written and practical board exams before they can register with the College of Registered Massage Therapists of British Columbia. Treatment from an RMT may be submitted to health insurance benefits plans that have registered massage therapy coverage. For your convenience, our clinic provides direct billing to most major extended health plans.
What are the differences between a spa massage and a massage at Focus Physio + Wellness?
Stereotypically, a spa massage (which may or may not be performed by a RMT) tends to be relaxing and gentle, while a massage at Focus done by one of our RMTs is designed to address muscle tension, soreness, and restriction. In addressing these issues, we hope to achieve improvements in pain and mobility.
Do I have to totally disrobe for my massage therapy session?
No, you do not. Regardless of what clothing (if any) you choose to remove, you can receive an effective, beneficial, and therapeutic massage. With our clinicians, your comfort and ability to relax is very important. It enables them to deliver effective massage therapy as well as make you feel at ease. If at any time you feel uncomfortable due to pain, treatment, or draping, please let your RMT know. Before and after the massage, you will be able to undress and dress in complete privacy.
Can I get a massage while in acute pain?
Yes, massage therapy can be used with both acute and chronic issues. If you are experiencing a more acute injury or flare-up, please communicate with your therapist. The therapist will then decide the best method of treatment going forward. This may include some work in the acute area or a corresponding area to address compensational issues or contributing factors for the current episode. Your RMT may also refer you to one of our physiotherapists for further assessment or treatment.
