Shockwave Therapy

Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or improving athletic performance, we’re here to guide your healing journey.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. These waves are directed at targeted areas of pain or injury to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair.

This therapy is especially effective for treating chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, and muscle trigger points. At Focus Physio + Wellness, shockwave therapy is used as part of a personalized treatment plan to help reduce pain, restore mobility, and support long-term recovery.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As with any physiotherapy appointment, your physiotherapist will take a detailed history and perform an assessment of your injury. The physio will then explain your injury and outline why shockwave would be an appropriate form of treatment. The treatment procedure will be described in detail and the therapist will ask for your consent before beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does shockwave therapy hurt?
During the application of shockwave, there can be some discomfort for the duration of the treatment which is typically 5-10 minutes long. The injured area may be slightly uncomfortable as the shockwave treatment is applied directly to the site of the injury. While many individuals report a significant decrease in symptoms, in some cases there may be a slight increase in sensitivity and soreness for the next 24-48 hours.
Is shockwave treatment covered under my extended health?
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! People often seek out physiotherapy when they have an acute injury. However, physiotherapists also have the expertise to help in injury prevention and movement optimization. After a detailed physical assessment, your physiotherapist can customize an exercise program that helps optimize movement mechanics to allow you function more efficiently.
What conditions does shockwave therapy help?
Current research has shown shockwave therapy to be effective in the treatment of Achilles tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder tendinopathies and calcifications, muscle trigger points, and patellar tendinopathies (Jumper’s knee).
How does shockwave therapy work?
Shockwave therapy consists of strong acoustic pulses that penetrate the body’s tissue to stimulate the regenerating and reparative processes. It does this by increasing collagen production and microcirculation, as well as decreasing calcified cells in tissues.
What are the benefits of shockwave therapy?
Shockwave is a non-invasive treatment that can be completed in clinic. It has been shown to be useful in long term or chronic conditions. Most people see results in 3-4 sessions.
Are there reasons why I cannot get shockwave?
While considered generally safe, there are a few cases in which shockwave therapy should not be performed. These include circulatory disorders where bleeding may be a concern, injuries in close proximity to a malignant tumour, presence of an infection, and injuries near the abdomen or lumbar spine during pregnancy. Your physiotherapist will review all the contraindications, risks, and benefits as part of the informed consent process prior to any treatment session.
